It’s just about that time! What time? Free Comic Book Day (also fondly known as Geek New Year)!
When? It’s held on the 1st Saturday in May every year! It lands on May 2nd for 2015.
Where? All over the world! But we would love for you to come and celebrate with us at Heroes’ Beacon on 25 Charlotte Street, Saint John, N.B.
Who? Everybody is welcome! If you are are young, old, children, new to comics, veteran readers! Free Comic Book Day is for everybody!
Why? The better question is- why NOT? Who doesn’t love FREE comics and other swag, face painting, popcorn, giveaways and the chance to meet awesome people who love the same things you do?
If this is your first Free Comic Book Day let me be the first to say- welcome! And be prepared for tons of fun!
The first Free Comic Book Day was held in 2002, as proposed by a retailer who thought that opening weekend of Spider-Man would be a great opportunity for comic retailers to take advantage of the press and promotions around the comic book medium. Not every Free Comic Book Day has a movie opening that lines up with it, but seems to go well even when the two don’t line up.
And here we are, 13 years later. There are as many opinions on Free Comic Book Day as there are retailers it seems, but those who are a bit anxious about it are just that way because we all fear being too busy to handle because we want everyone to have an awesome experience, or not ordering enough for everyone. So really, those are not terrible fears to have because they all stem from wanting to carry on something great. Me? I’m just plain excited! I adore Free Comic Book Day!
In bigger cities some places might host book signings (a band wagon I hope we can jump on some time in the near future), face painting, BBQ’s- there are so many things that stores do to celebrate! So, wherever you are, on May 2nd, find a comic book store and check it out!
My one and only suggestion is come early for best selection!
