The holidays are a wonderful time of year to spend with friends and family – but these days it can be easy to lose yourself amongst the gadgets, the work or even the social media.
Here are some tips to help you connect with your friends and family over the holidays including a bit of help from your favorite geek activities.
First things first…
Put Away the Apps
It can be very tempting to lose yourself on social media keeping tabs on your friend’s activities over the holidays. Cell phones can already be a huge distraction and cut into your face-to-face social time. When your out with friends or family, take the time to switch your cell phones to vibrate and put them away. The people around you will be grateful for it.
Pick Up the Phone or Go for Coffee
Don’t forget to call the people closest to you. It’s very easy to catch up on messenger or similar apps, but nothing beats a live conversation. Take the time to catch up with a call or a face to face meeting over coffee. Better yet, host a little get together and crack out some party games.
Share a Classic Movie
Crack out your collection of old DVDs or turn on Netflix and share one of your favorites with your friends. Seeing the latest movie in theatres is nice and all but the goal here is to be social (something hard to do at a movie theatre). Sharing your favorite films with family (especially kids) and friends can be a great way to connect. Share your favorite Disney films with your kids, neices or nephews. Share the joys of The Dark Crystal with friends who haven’t seen it. Find a favorite Christmas movie that you all know every word to like The Grinch, The Christmas Story or Christmas Vacation.
Share a Book
Get the kids in your family reading a book and share in the experience! Find your favorites and enjoy. They don’t even have to be Christmas related!
Bowling, Laser Tag, Skiing, Skating…
Pick a activity that allows people to get together and get active. Your muscles may be sore in the morning but it’s a fun shared outing that gets everyone out of the house and away from the screen for a bit.
Board Games and Card Games
Of course board games and card games were going to be on this list! What better way to share the holiday and connect with your close ones than with a good party game! Put away those old Hasbro games like Monopoly and try some games that are more engaging, more fun and more social. Fend off disease for Christmas with Pandemic. Save your kittens with Kittens in a Blender. Bring power to all with Power Grid! Pass around the art board with Telestrations! Share your favorites or learn something new! (We have some great games for older players too like Personally Incorrect!)
Are the kids in your life into Pokemon? Find some time to learn and play the game with them. It could be a great shared experience and be a good memory!
Regardless what you do over the course of the holiday, make some time for those close to you. Put down the electornics, turn off the screens and share some quality time!
