Let’s talk about games, more specifically, Roleplaying Games. What is a roleplaying game? In its simplest explanation, it is a chance to play pretend. When you get deeper into the hobby though, it is a time to let your imagination take over and develop a story together with your friends.
This has been a favourite hobby of mine for over 30 years. I started with first edition Advanced Dungeons & Dragons. Over the years, I have played through all the new incarnations of the game with fighters, wizards, clerics and every other option. I have also explored many other games from the science fiction of Shadowrun and Rifts to the gothic horror of Vampire the Masquerade and Call of Cthulhu among many others.
Sometimes you will find your story around a table with a group of friends with a map and miniatures or without. Other times you will join a large group and act out your stories in an improvisational Live Action Role Playing game. Maybe you will attend a convention in town like Impossible Realities or a game night at Heroes’ Beacon where you can meet for a game with strangers, who may become lifelong friends.
If you haven’t tried roleplaying before, there is always time to start. Nobody is too young or too old. All you need to do is find your story, whether you are taking part as character or as a Game Master. You can always come by the store on a Wednesday and try D&D or stop in on June 17th for Free RPG Day and get a sample of what is available.
