This week has had a bunch of news come from Fantasy Flight Games. Earlier in the week it was announced that Christian Petersen, Found and CEO of Fantasy Flight Games will be retiring at the end of the year. This was a planned when Asmodee bought FFG. Christian wanted more time to focus on his family, but with the loss of their founder and creator of iconic games light Twilight Imperium we can help but wonder where the direction of FFG will go.
Luckily, we did not have to wait too long. Wednesday at GenCon 2018 Fantasy Flight had their annual In-Flight report to highlight new products and releases. I think they had some great surprises and the future of FFG has never looked so bright. I’m going to attempt to highlight just a few of the announcements.
First up, after 13 years Arkham Horror will be moving to a 3rd edition! The game will have much of the feel that we already love while modernising it and giving a bit of new life. Investigator will still risk their sanity moving from location to location in the beloved city of Arkham searching for clues to stop the Elder Gods and their minions from destroying everything. But now they will do it on a modular board and each scenario (4 included in the base game) will have its own unique event deck. I’m a huge fan of all things Lovecraftian but never added Arkham Horror to my collection. Come Q4 of this year I’ll fix that!
Next we have a bunch of news for the various Star Wars games FFG makes. Star Wars Armada will be getting the largest miniatures FFG has ever made! I wasn’t able to find a good picture of it… but it is massive!
Star Wars Destiny will be getting a new set in November called “Across the Galaxy” that will introduce some great new mechanics to an already incredibly fun game. You’ll soon be able to add upgrades onto ship and vehicles. This means you’ll finally be able to put R2-D2 in an X-Wing! Plus we will see cards from the “Solo: A Star Wars Story” movie including a neutral Han and Chewie! I’ve been loving the diversity of this game. If you have not given it a try come join us on a play night at the store!
The newest Star Wars game, Legion was not left out. Being less than a year old Legion, a miniatures game is seeing an ever growing following and a steady stream of options to grow and customise your army. Soon the Rebels will be able to add Chewbacca and Wookie Warriors to their roster. This makes the 3rd wave for Rebels balancing off the already announced 3rd wave for the Empire that introduced Palpatine and Royal Guards! Next year they plan to introduce a new product called “Personal Expansions”. Both Empire and Rebels will see kits that add a generic Commander (something we have been asking for since launch), medical droids, and other utility characters that you can add into existing squads giving a great level of customisation.
X-Wing, which has a highly anticipated 2nd edition due out in September will be getting two new factions! The Resistance and the First Order. Existing ships from those factions will see use thanks to two new Conversion Kits plus a slew of new ships will be launching in Q4.
Lastly on the Star Wars front and perhaps the most exciting news is that both X-Wing and Legion will be getting Clone Wars expansion! With the announcement of Clone Wars returning next year for 12 new episodes these are sure to be a highly sought after product. They didn’t have much to reveal but did say we can expect to see the “Jedi Star Fighter” and “Sith Infiltrator” come to X-Wing in the first wave.
Okay that was a lot of Star Wars news. The last thing they announced and the most interesting is a brand newproperty. A unique card game by acclaimed designer Richard Garfield! Keyforge: Call of the Archons, is set in a new world called “The Crucible” where god like beings called Archons do battle.
Unlike most card games, there will be no deck building or boosters. The game will offer, in addition to the Core Game, Archon decks. EVER single deck will be unique. Which means when you buy a deck you will be the only person in the world to have that deck! How that is going to work boggles the mind but with 104,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 possible decks at launch I guess that will be enough to go around. I’m really curious to see how this game plays and where it goes. If there is one thing I know for sure we can trust Richard Garfield to make a game that is fun, interesting, and has longevity.
All of this is in addition to expansions for the Game of Thrones Board game, Legend of the Five Rings RPG, and more! You can watch the video of the report thanks to the guys over at Team Convinant.
