Countdown to Action Comics 1000 part 5

Check last week’s part 4 here:

Family has always been important to Superman and becomes more of a focus in my top 10 this week. Whether it is genetic family, adoptive family or protecting other families, many stories show love and hope when you keep your family close.

Friends of Superman #6

There is the family of Genetics and this week, we realize how important Kal-El’s father was to him. Jor-El was a leading scientist on Krypton, first mentioned in Action Comics #1 in 1938, but not making a full appearance in comics until 1945. Jor-El made many discoveries and inventions on Krypton, not the least of which was discovering the Phantom Zone and creating the projector to open the gateway. His greatest achievement however was being the scientist, who foresaw the imminent destruction of the planet and sent his son in a rocket to earth, where he would become the greatest hero the world would know. I also would be remiss if I didn’t mention more of Superman’s Kryptonian family, his Mother Lara, uncles Zor-El (Supergirl’s father) and Nim-El.

Foes of Superman #6

On the flip side of Superman’s family is General Zod, first appearing in 1961. Zod was often shown to oppose Jor-El on Krypton before being banished to the Phantom Zone. After being released from the Phantom Zone with his allies, he realizes he has the same powers as Superman. Superman would often force Zod back to the Phantom Zone. But the most emotional story would come when Clark and Lois adopt Christopher, who had been revealed as Lor-Zod, the son of Zod and Ursa. Zod remains among the most threatening enemies Superman has yet to face.
